History Made! Bangladesh Girls Win Maiden Saff Football Championship

At the Dasarath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Wednesday, Bangladesh defeated the hosts, Nepal, 2-1, to win the Saff Women’s Championship again.After a goalless first half, Bangladesh’s goals came from Monika Chakma and Ritu Parna Chakma in the second half.Bangladesh defeated Nepal in a closely contested final at the Dasarath Stadium in Kathmandu, giving Nepal its first title. The defeat was Nepal’s twelfth loss in an international women’s football final and the sixth time the team has fallen short in the finals of the SAFF Championship. At the same location, Bangladesh had previously won the 2022 championship after defeating Nepal in a comparable match.

History

Women’s football took off in Bangladesh when the first national football tournament dedicated to women was held in November 2007 under the Vision Asia programme. Eight teams from different districts across the country participated in the tournament.Because of the tournament’s success, the Bangladesh Football Federation decided to use the Vision Bangladesh initiative to host the 2008 Women’s School Football Tournament. The National Football Championship for Women was introduced the following year, for the participation of various district teams.A seasoned veteran of Dhaka’s football scene, Golam Rabbani Choton led the women’s national team in 2009.  However, the Bangladesh Women’s team continued to be neglected in the late 2000s.

During the 2010 South Asian Games in Dhaka, Bangladesh played their debut international match against Nepal on January 29, 2010, losing 1-0.The team impressed in the following matches by pulling off two consecutive wins against Sri Lanka and then Pakistan. Although they lost 0–7 to India in their last group stage game, Bangladesh secured the bronze medal. The team went on to compete later that year, in the 2010 SAFF Women’s Championship, which was played on home soil, but this time at Cox’s Bazar. They won significantly against Bhutan and Sri Lanka (2–0 and 9–0), but were defeated by Nepal in the semi-finals.

The Bangladesh Women’s Football League was established in 2011 by the Football Federation.. The national team was active the following year, participating in the 2012 SAFF Championship. They lost to India and Sri Lanka, with their only win coming against Bhutan, thanks to a goal from captain Prue Swinu The team failed to go past the group stage in spite of this.
