Biography

Sarjis Alam is a human rights activist, a student of Zoology Department at Dhaka University and one of the national coordinators of the Students Against Discrimination Movement. The Students Against Discrimination Movement is a student-led protest demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs in Bangladesh, which was ruled by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in June 2024 to include a 30% quota for descendants of freedom fighters. Started after resuscitation. In Bangladesh, quota-linked employment makes up 56% of first- and second-class government positions.A total of 30 percent is reserved for descendants of ‘liberation fighters’. This quota has been widely criticized as a discriminatory system of access to jobs that has been accused of being used politically.

Sarjis was born and brought up in Bamankumar village of Alokwa union in Atwari upazila of Panchagarh district. The village is just two to three kilometers from the Bangladesh-India border. He grew up in a completely non-communal environment, where Hindus and Muslims were almost equal in number and people of other religions coexisted. His father’s name was Aktaruzzaman Saju and mother’s name was Bakera Begum. led what later became a non-cooperation movement to overthrow Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Education

Sarjis Alokwa completed his secondary education from Scheduled School and College. He then moved to the capital to study at BAF Shaheen College. As a student, Sergis was always very bright. He is the first boy in his class and one of the only two students in the entire upazila who secured GPA 5 in all subjects in SSC. He passed HSC from Dhaka BAF Shaheen College. Sarjis completed his BSc and MSc degrees in zoology at Dhaka University. He won the Dhaka University Daksu election as a member. Moreover, he used to participate as a debater in debate competitions at various levels.

Career

On 2nd February 2017, a group of freshers gathered in room no. No. 104 of Shaheed Salam Bhawan, Amar Ekushey Hall of Dhaka University. Among them was Sarjis Alam, a young man from Panchagarh in northern Bangladesh. He got admission in the zoology department. The room was very dirty and untidy. They clean it and spread the mattress together. About 40 of them were in that room. This is called ‘Ganaroom’. To get a seat in this crowded Ganaroom, you need a recommendation from Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). As a result, joining politics became compulsory for everyone. Then there is the guest room culture, where you have to face ragging and bullying. The problem with introduction is that this whole environment pushes you away from studies, like my first year results were very bad.

Sarjis was one of the coordinators of the student movement; The anti-discrimination student movement, opposing quotas in government jobs, turned into a campaign to oust Hasina from power. He gained national recognition along with Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmood, Hasnat Abdullah and others in mid-July 2024 when he and several other Dhaka University students were detained by the police after protests turned violent. On August 5, Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and departed the nation do Islam says their goals have not been fully met, and after Hasina’s resignation, the group aims to “abolish the fascist system forever”.

During the anti-quota movement in 2018, many Chhatra League members attempted sabotage. Sergis wrote about them on Facebook, which angered them. He was called alone in the guest room, informed by contacting his family. It was the 2019 Dhaka University Central Students’ Council (DACSU) elections that marked a turning point in his journey. He started the Zoology Departmental Debating Club at Dhaka University, held the position of General Secretary of the Ekushey Debating Club, and represented the Dhaka University Debating Club in a number of national debates. Debate played an important role in shaping Sargis into the rational person he is today. It improved his communication and organizational skills and improved his ability to think critically about anything.
