Biography

Manish Sisodia, an Indian politician, journalist, and former social activist, was born on January 5, 1972, and held the office of First Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi from 2015 to 2023.He represented the Patparganj constituency in the Delhi Assembly since 2015 and also represented this constituency. From 2013 to 2014. He was in judicial custody between February 2023 and August 2024 on corruption charges in a major Delhi liquor scam. He was granted bail by the Supreme Court of India on 9 August 2024, which he described as “a victory for honesty and truth”.He is a member of the National Executive Committee of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and one of its founding members.

Manish Sisodia was born in a Hindu Rajput family in Phagauta village of Hapur district in Uttar Pradesh. Born to a father who was a public school teacher, he attended the government school of his village. Later, he started his career as a journalist after completing his Diploma in Journalism, awarded by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1993.

Higher and Technical Education Reforms

The revolutionary shift in education brought about by Manish Sisodia goes beyond formal schooling.He has taken many initiatives in the field of higher and technical education including establishing three innovative new state universities – Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) in 2020, Delhi Sports University (DSU) in 2021 and Delhi Teachers. Claims of monies being embezzled from Delhi University College

In 2020, Sisodia found himself embroiled in a controversy involving alleged misappropriation of funds in four Delhi University colleges. Sisodia’s allegations are based on preliminary observations of an independent audit commissioned by the Delhi government to fund seven DU colleges. Preliminary findings of the audit indicated that four colleges—Deendayal Upadhyay (DDU) College, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Bhagini Nivedita College and Shahid Sukhdev College of Business Studies—had misused funds, leading to a public spat between the Delhi government and these institutions.

Career

Manish Sisodia also worked as a radio jockey in an FM radio station in his early career. Prior to working as a reporter, news producer, and news anchor for Zee News between 1996 and 1998, he hosted a number of shows, including “Zero Hour” for All India Radio. 1997 and 2005. Sisodia was a Cabinet member of the Delhi Government from December 2013 to February 2014. He was a minister and held several cabinet posts after becoming deputy chief minister, including the portfolio of education minister, through which he is credited with reforming and overhauling Delhi’s public education sector.

He resigned as deputy chief minister and all cabinet posts after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on corruption charges in a major liquor scam. Counter-allegations have been made against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the national government, alleging that they have been utilizing investigative agencies like the CBI and ED to target their political opponents. Additionally Sisodia is one of several politicians who have cases against them. In October 2023, the Supreme Court, however, held that the transfer of Rs 338 crore was provisionally established and initially denied bail to Manish Sisodia. He was eventually granted bail by the apex court on the condition that he surrender his passport and report daily to the investigating officer.

Conclusion

Sisodia’s links with Delhi Chief Minister and AAP founder Arvind Kejriwal go back to their time as leaders of the non-profit Change, which the latter set up to take up citizen cases involving the government. After officially quitting journalism, Sisodia founded Kabir with Kejriwal, a non-profit organization that organizes public hearings with government officials and the public. He was one of the key members of the team that drafted the Right to Information Act.
