Introduction

Autopsy report
The victim was sexually assaulted and raped before being strangled to death, according to an autopsy.The extensive four-page report also mentions a deep wound on her genitalia, lip, left leg, right hand, ring finger, neck and face. Reports said that the woman had scratch marks on her face caused by the accused’s fingernails. According to reports, pressure was applied to her face and throat and she was strangled, causing the thyroid cartilage to break. The report also noted bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts, “mutilated sex” and “genital torture” due to injuries to her genitalia. The exact cause of the injury to his eye remains undetermined.

The postmortem report also revealed that about 150 mg of semen was found in the vaginal swab. This finding, along with the extent of the injuries, led doctors and the victim’s parents to believe that it could be a case of gang-rape. Kolkata police dismissed such claims as rumors, suggesting that it was impossible to separate semen from multiple individuals with the naked eye during an autopsy.

Arrested
After investigation, police arrested a suspect, Sanjay Roy, on August 9 after finding his Bluetooth headset at the crime scene. The suspect is a citizen volunteer of the Calcutta Police Disaster Management Force and a member of the Police Welfare Association.He is well-versed in boxing and has a close relationship with a few senior Kolkata Police personnel. He was posted at the police outpost near the medical college and would act as a go-between for some patients near him. He was married four times and has been described as a womanizer and domestic abuser. Calcutta Police informed that he confessed to the crime. The accused’s mother defended her son and said he was being framed.
Conclusion
On 13 August 2024, the Calcutta High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation so far and asked the state police to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They also identified the possibility of destruction of evidence if the state police continued their investigation.
